Almost half of the territory of the Abruzzo region is occupied by reserves, parks, marine and natural areas. To be more precise, we have here 3 national parks, one regional park and 38 protected nature reserves. 75% of European animal and plant living species can be found in Abruzzo. This is why the region is also known as the green region of Europe. Among the species, some of which are very rare, we find the Marsican brown bear, the Apennine wolf and the golden eagle, to name a few.
